Emery Walker's House

Emery Walker's House - Private Tour.

Hogarth's House and The Mulberry Garden.

7 Hammersmith Terrace, Hammersmith, London.

7 Hammersmith Terrace was a private house until 1999 and contains the most complete Arts & Crafts interior in the UK. For those of you who attended the talk by Ben Maggs on book bindings you will remember the importance of Thomas James Cobden-Sanderson as one of the greatest book binders of all time, and he and his wife lived at No. 7 before the Walker family.

Cobden-Sanderson set up the Doves Bindery just nearby and in 1900 he established the Doves Press with Emery Walker becoming a partner however sadly this partnership ended acrimoniously. The Walker family moved to 7 Hammersmith Terrace in 1903.

Emery Walker was a great friend of William Morris, and the interior has hand-blocked Morris & Co wallpaper and textiles and furniture by Philip Webb. This is just a small insight into the fascinating history of this delightful house beside the river Thames.

After the house visit guests will make their own arrangements for lunch and there are plenty of pubs nearby to choose from. At 2pm the group will walk down to Hogarth’s House, where painter and master engraver William Hogarth lived from 1749 until his death.

Guests will be able to visit this charming house at their leisure which includes the beautiful walled Mulberry Garden which has relatively recently been restored.
