This antique Tabriz carpet is in excellent original condition woven around 1880-1890, the soft blue dyes and muted brown and terracotta tones are easy on the eye. The design is a small repeating intricate 'herati' pattern with a diamond central medallion. There is some wonderful abrash which is the term for dye change in this classical antique carpet woven from one of the best weaving areas in Persia.
Tabriz carpets from Northwest Persia are distinguished by their excellent weave and by their remarkable adherence to the classical traditions of Persian rug design, but they cannot be distinguished by any particular pattern or by their coloration. Tabriz rugs offer classical medallion designs and a host of all over patterns as well in every colour imaginable, from brilliant rich tones to soft pastels.
